MILK

Milk

A specially developed mare’s milk replacer. Specially formulated to match the natural composition of horse milk and meet the nutritional and dietary needs of an orphan foal or when the mare does not produce enough milk. The Mare’s Milk Replacer does not, however, contain the important antibodies present in the colostrum (first milk) of the mare. Ask your vet for advice if your foal is orphaned or rejected.

KRAFFT MILK can easily be stored in the stable. Many horse breeders keep it readily available as a precautionary measure. KRAFFT MILK has saved the lives of many foals.

General advice

  • During its first days, the foal should be kept in a warm, draught free and clean stable. Following this, the temperature in the stable may be lowered a little. We recommend using a heat lamp to keep your foal warm.
  • Make sure that the umbilical cord of the newborn foal does not get infected. If necessary, immerse the umbilicus in a diluted antiseptic iodine solution (such as Jodopax).
  • Give your foal some top quality hay and a dust-free bedding. Change the hay regularly and make sure that there is always a bucket of fresh water to allow the foal to drink with a natural head position (i.e. not too high).
  • Hay given to young foals should ideally contain a minimum of 70 g of digestible protein per kg feed. Ask one of KRAFFT’s nutrition experts for advice on how to best feed your foal. A supplement feed such as KRAFFT FOAL may be needed if the quality of the hay is not ideal.
  • If this is the case, give your foal free access to a concentrate feed – such as KRAFFT FOAL – as soon as possible. Start by putting small amounts of concentrate feed in the foal’s feed bucket/tub after its usual milk feed. Remove any untouched feed before adding new concentrate feed to the bucket/tub. Once the foal has learnt to eat the concentrate feed, it can be fed from a wall-mounted manger. Make sure that the wall-mounted manger is within easy reach of the foal and not too high. Also, make sure that your foal has unlimited access to clean and fresh water.
  • Your foal’s social contact with other horses is very important and must not be forgotten or overlooked. Try, as early on as possible, to find a playmate for your foal – for example, a young horse or pony. Do not handle your foal more than necessary. It is already influenced by and dependent of man and should instead be given the opportunity to identify and interact with other horses.

Feed instructions

  • See feeding table for detailed quantity of feed
  • It is extremely important for the foal to get fed colostrum 1 – 2 hours after birth (max. 12 hours) and then, around 1 – 2 litres. This is because the foal needs to build up an immune system. In some cases, the addition of blood plasma may be necessary. Ask your vet for advice.
  • Dissolve KRAFFT MILK in hot water (50oC) but do not feed your foal until the temperature is down to around 38-40oC. Use a thermometer to check the water temperature.
  • If drinking too fast, the foal may choke on the milk. To avoid this, make sure the foal has a low head carriage while drinking.
  • When the foal is a few weeks old, you can start weaning it onto KRAFFT FOAL. Start by adding a handful of KRAFFT FOAL to the KRAFFT MILK in the feed bucket/tub towards the end of each feed and then gradually reduce the amount of KRAFFT MILK once the foal is eating sufficient amounts of forage and concentrate feeds.
